The Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service is a national leader in preparing students in all fields of study for lifetimes of active citizenship, promoting new knowledge in the field, and building an enduring and broadly shared ethos of citizenship and public service across Tufts University. Tisch College was established in 2000 to support the core Tufts mission of promoting civic engagement.
Active citizenship is infused into every part of the Tufts community. Tisch College facilitates and supportes a wide range of student programs that enable them to develop their potential to contribute meaningfully to the greater world. We work directly with the communities in which Tufts has a presence, creating mutually productive community partnshisp with faculty and students. Tisch College engages faculty in civic engagement research and teaching, with a special focus on the types and impact of civic participation, and research on how civic engagement is taught and learned. Finally, we engage Tufts alumni interested in building stronger communities and societies, at home and abroad.
Tisch College also supports a wide variety of community-based research initiatives aimed at increasing knowledge about citizenship and public service. Research projects include:
Tisch College Multi-Year Study of Student Activities and Attitudes
Tisch College is engaged in a multi-year study of Tufts students - 60 each from the classes of 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 - that measures how civic and political activities and attitudes develop and to what extent they are related to the level of civic and political engagement of students in high school, prior to entering Tufts.
Faculty Research
Tisch College supports faculty research in a broad range of civic and public service activities. Most often this research is supported through the Faculty Fellows program. Much of this work is published and incorporated into the curriculum across Tufts University.
Civic Engagement at Research Universities
Tufts University and Campus Compact, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting community service, civic engagement, and service-learning in higher education, initiated a network of research universities committed to learning from one another and elevating their collective leadership to institutionalize civic engagement across all of higher education.
Tisch College is regularly developing internships with partners near and far, for Tufts students during summers and post-graduation, and welcome the opportunity to work with organizations to develop such internships.
